I wanted to make a dead baby doll hat for this contest, mainly because I love making my cartoon characters that I draw come to life as 3-d objects and I love dead baby jokes. and this shirt design goes really well with this hat. Dead baby dolls are so creepy but yet, you can’t help but love how adorable they truly are. I know some of those dead baby jokes are pretty horrible but if you are ever told one and get offended … just think back to that sweet adorable dead baby hat you saw on ThreadKnits and then think about that joke with one of those cute little poly-filled stuffed dolls. Now see… isn’t that a much better image? so if you ever do hear a dead baby joke and start to get offended just think of fiber stuffed carnage not … actual carnage… it makes the jokes much more enjoyable. it’s sick i know but at least i rationalized it to make sense to me. :o)
but anyways I’m going to explain the process on this hat a little better, so please bare with me.
ok so first things first, sketched out my design, and grab a 36- pegged knitting loom and with 2 skeins of light purple acrylic yarn. I used simple e-wrap stitches the whole way through. The hat base has to be 36 rows long in order to be the correct “one size fits all” that i usually do. cast off using the loom hook still and pull the loop shut tight at the top, and crochet a tight chain and then slip knot. That completes your base cap piece.
second, i crochet the bulbous head piece. still using the light purple yarn bug this time only one strand. single crochet, working in the round, using size 9.00mm N hook. I guess the best way to explain my crochet style would be amigurumi crochet but instead of coming from the back and going over the top of the hook with the working yarn, I'm actually coming up from the front over to the top….. it makes little ”x’s” that all I know… I don’t know if that’s just wrong… but I can’t seem to get out of the habit. but anyways I crocheted the bulbous head part by simple increases and decreases when i thought it would be appropriate to get the shape I needed. After that I crocheted a bright pink hexagon, a neon blue triangle, and a lovely yellow square. these are all the patches that will later be the eyebrow, eye patch and the back of the head patch. after those were finished I made two green rings for hair scrunchies, and a black soulless eye (which later get embroidered with white yarn to make the little shiny parts. after all the pieces were created I had to sew it up to look like the image I was going for.
the eyebrow is the first piece to be sewn on. I bent the corners of the triangle underneath it’s self to make it look rounded on the edges. after some pulping with some poly-fill, I continued to sew around the edges to secure it to the head. next I had to pin down where the eyes were going to go, to give it that weird little inward bend. third, I took the hexagon piece and pinned it to where I wanted it sewed around it’s edge and again the same thing but on the middle of the back, the yellow square patch. last thing to be sewn on was the strange eyeball which as you can see went under the eyebrow.
after everything got sewed up it was time for some embroidery sarcastic “woo-hoo” lol i dislike embroidering… probably the worst thing about making a dead baby doll hat is all the embroidery lol. But alas, it has to be done. All the black lines you see on the face and on the back patch, all hand embroidery, it makes it look super cute and creepy but … it takes such a long time. but in the end … I'm always glad i did all the work by hand and that it usually always comes out looking like how I wanted it to. (except for the shiz-tzu hat… :o( )
after all the big things are taken care of it’s all about the details. I have this awesome chunky rainbow yarn and a thinner twirled rainbow yarn, i took both too make Betty’s hair and I think it works great. it actually made it flow better when you want to head bang while wearing the hat… believe it will happen… last but not least I put her hair scrunchies on her, and she look so cool!
I’m really happy that I make these hats for people, I get to share my work with the world, one hat at a time. All that matters is that they make people smile and be happy… that's what counts the most. :o)
What kind of a present do you get for a dead baby?
…...A dead puppy. Lol (couldn't help myself)
Hope you all enjoy Betty the Dead Baby Doll Hat
