when i heard about the threadknits contest, i began looking through the threadless designs to see what i could start working on. i found "the cheshire" and it reminded me of some left over yarn that i had which was a fun stripey blue-to-purple dye called "blueberry pie." it hit me that i could use that to give the feeling of the cheshire cat's stripes. i then looked for a basic hat pattern online and got out my size 11 purple needles. i modified the pattern for the "school colors hat" on lionbrand.com by giving it an inch of ribbing around the bottom of the hat and ignoring the instructions for using 2 colors of yarn. basically i just needed the instructions for the shaping of the hat. i completed the hat in the stockinette stitch in about 2 hours while talking on the phone with my bestie for life jen, who gave me the idea to use glow in the dark yarn for the smile to replicate the original t-shirt design. jen and i then went on a google search to see if in fact glow yarn existed and found out that indeed it does! then the on to the excitement-fueled shopping trip for glow yarn and other supplies! unfortunately, glow yarn was no where to be found on my whirlwind tour of a.c.moore, walmart, jo-ann fabrics, and michael's so back to the internet for some online ordering! meanwhile, i knit the ears by casting on 14 stitches, knitting 6 rows in the stockinette stitch then decreasing a stitch every row until 1 stitch remained to form triangles, which i then sewed onto the hat. next, i sewed on the googly eyes, stitched the nose using pink yarn, and the whiskers using black yarn. i waited for my glow yarn to come in the mail. 2 days later when it arrived, i got busy knitting the smile by starting out with 20 stitches and increasing by 1 stitch every row until i had a large enough smile shape, which i sewed onto the hat. the glow yarn looks awesome and really makes it like the original t-shirt (thanks bff!). "the cheshire" completed!

when i heard about the threadknits contest, i began looking through the threadless designs to see what i could start working on. i found "the cheshire" and it reminded me of some left over yarn that i had which was a fun stripey blue-to-purple dye called "blueberry pie." it hit me that i could use that to give the feeling of the cheshire cat's stripes. i then looked for a basic hat pattern online and got out my size 11 purple needles. i modified the pattern for the "school colors hat" on lionbrand.com by giving it an inch of ribbing around the bottom of the hat and ignoring the instructions for using 2 colors of yarn. basically i just needed the instructions for the shaping of the hat. i completed the hat in the stockinette stitch in about 2 hours while talking on the phone with my bestie for life jen, who gave me the idea to use glow in the dark yarn for the smile to replicate the original t-shirt design. jen and i then went on a google search to see if in fact glow yarn existed and found out that indeed it does! then the on to the excitement-fueled shopping trip for glow yarn and other supplies! unfortunately, glow yarn was no where to be found on my whirlwind tour of a.c.moore, walmart, jo-ann fabrics, and michael's so back to the internet for some online ordering! meanwhile, i knit the ears by casting on 14 stitches, knitting 6 rows in the stockinette stitch then decreasing a stitch every row until 1 stitch remained to form triangles, which i then sewed onto the hat. next, i sewed on the googly eyes, stitched the nose using pink yarn, and the whiskers using black yarn. i waited for my glow yarn to come in the mail.
