I might have gone a little overboard with this one. I was flipping through Threadless designs one night when "Thumb War" by tenso GRAPHICS caught my eye. It struck me that it would be hilarious to knit the little costumes in the illustration. So I knit up the army guy and Rambo, but it felt like something was missing. What if your thumbs want to enact other wars, like the Civil War? Or maybe...Star Wars? Or how about the eternal conflicts between spies, pirates, and ninjas?
The entire assortment was made using yarn I happened to have on hand, mostly acrylic worsted, but also some nice wools and blends. Most of the hats were knit in the round from the top down, with any embellishments knit/sewn on later. Most of the weapons were knit flat using various shaping techniques, such as casting on stitches at the end of a row to make the piece wider in places. I knit the light sabers as i-cords at the base, the decreased to two stitches knit in garter stitch to make them narrow and twisty.
A big shout-out to my husband, Dave, for being a very patient co-thumb model and his input on designing Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hope you guys get a kick out of these!
