I am so excited that I finished these! When I heard about this competition I knew exactly what I was going to make. I am extra happy because I have never made mittens, I got to use the felting machine and this is my first project with wearable needle felting.
I got really excited about knitting and felting that I forgot to take pictures of that process. First I knit in the round, giant wool mittens that went all the way to my armpits. The owner of my local yarn shop told me she just bought a felting machine. It is like a washing machine but it only agitates the items. I popped the giant mittens in and 30 minutes they had felted themselves down to a normal size.
I brought them home and I had to find forms that were the size of my arms. The mittens have to dry on a form or they wouldn't have fit. So I spent quite sometime trying the mittens on different stuff in my house. I tried tall water glasses, a thermos and even my fire extinguisher. The picture shows them drying on the water glass but I found it to be too small for my upper forearm. Finally I found a large Orangina bottle was the correct size of my arm. I let the two mitten dry on the two bottles of Orangina that I had emptied during my knitting sessions.
While they were drying I started needle felting the eyes and giraffe spots. The picture looks a bit creepy with the felting needles in the eyes!
When the mittens were dry I tacked on the giraffe's spots wen it was still on the Orangina bottle. Be careful if you ever do this because I broke a needle when I wasn't paying attention. When the spots were tacked on I removed the bottles and inserted foam in the mittens so I could felt the spots on all the way.
I am really happy with the mittens because they are really warm and cute. Plus I only stabbed myself once with the needle felting tool. I love them as much as they love each other!
